The Long & McQuade High School All-star
Jazz Band
Sorry, this group is not presently operating.
BACKGROUND:
The Long & McQuade High School All-star Jazz Band was founded in 1996 to meet the needs of talented high school jazz musicians by providing them with the opportunity to perform with their peers under the direction of a professional jazz musician and educator.
Past All-star groups have earned top ratings for festival performances and have garnered invitations to perform internationally. Many former members have gone on to pursue music careers.
MEMBERSHIP:
Membership in the group is limited and is granted based on the results of a rigorous audition process and references. Auditions are held in late September/early October and applications can be obtained from Long & McQuade Music Ltd. or by submitting the form provided below. You must be a member in good standing of your high school music program to be eligible for membership.
Past membership in the group does not ensure future membership; auditions are required of all applicants.
FORMAT:
The band follows a combo format (5 - 10 players, including at least 3 rhythm section players) in order to focus on improvisation skills and small ensemble playing.
REHEARSALS:
Two-hour weekly rehearsals are held at the instructor's private rehearsal studio in west St. James. Professional jazz clinicians are invited to workshop the group as often as possible.
Members are expected to make attendance at rehearsals and performances a priority.
PERFORMANCES:
One of the aims of the All-star groups is to provide exposure and performance experience for band members. Generally, there is a concert in December and early June, plus other opportunities throughout the year.
AUDITION PROCESS:
Fill in and submit the audition application form by the specified date. Audition packages are available in the band department at Long & McQuade Music. If you live out of Winnipeg, you may request that the package be faxed to you. The audition will include prepared pieces in the jazz style, improvisation and sight-reading.
