The Manitoba Conservatory of Music & Arts (M.C.M.A.), in co-operation with Class Act Music Productions, presently runs an adult jazz combo. Comprised of a rhythm section and up to 6 horns, adults have an opportunity to develop their jazz skills through 18 two-hour rehearsals directed by Janice Finlay. Starting in mid-September, these classes are held bi-weekly in Janice's well-equipped rehearsal studio in the west St. James area of Winnipeg. The course is aimed at adults with at least a moderate level of ability on their instrument, as the focus is on playing jazz rather than on instrumental technique.
The Long & McQuade High School All-star Jazz Band was founded by Janice Finlay in 1996 to meet the needs of talented high school jazz musicians by providing them with the opportunity to perform with their peers under the guidance of a professional jazz musician and educator. Past groups have earned top ratings for festival performances and have been invited to perform internationally and many former members have gone on to pursue stellar music careers. The group is no longer in operation.
Woodwind Ensembles will be made available as numbers permit. Possible ensembles include saxophone quartet, woodwind quintet, flute duos, etc. Details and prices will depend on numbers and length of study, which will be tailored for each group. Please contact us for more details.
